Kindergarten鈥檚 rendition of their nativity production,听Whoops-a-Daisy Angel,听was broadcast live to the school community this year so everyone could share the 性用社鈥檚 production and all their hard work leading up to the performance. We were fortunate to be able to invite parents to watch in person.听This delightful nativity play tells the story of听a disorganised but loveable angel who is chosen to show the way to Bethlehem.听
Parents and 性用社 alike were enchanted by T1鈥檚 rendition of their Russian Christmas story, Babushka. Babushka lived in the countryside and opened her door, one snowy night, to find three men standing before her. She wanted to join them in giving gifts to the King of Kings but had too much cleaning to do. T1 parents were invited to watch in person and the rest of Byron House enjoyed the Nativity being live-streamed to their own classrooms.
Parents and friends of the School were treated to a Christmas musical feast at our annual 鈥楶iazza Brass鈥 event听at Senior House.听Our brass players were also joined this year by many of our other talented young musicians to get the crowd into the festive spirit,听including Form 5 and 6 Pop Choir, Big Band and听Rednotes.
Children throughout St John鈥檚 have worked hard to produce individual Christmas card designs during their lessons as part of our annual Festive art project. Any profits from the cards go to the Parents鈥 Association鈥檚 chosen charity Castle School which is a Special school in the centre of Cambridge which caters for pupils with a range of learning needs from aged 2-19 years.
There was a buzz of excitement in the Byron House Library as some of the 性用社 in Form 2 assembled to take part in an online sketching workshop by author and illustrator Chris听Riddell. Mr听Riddell, who was Children鈥檚 Laureate, has also won the prestigious Greenaway Medal three times for his illustrations. The online session was designed to help inspire a love of reading and drawing and Art Teacher and Librarian Mrs Julia Clarke remarked, 鈥楢uthor visits are so crucial to inspiring 性用社 to read from an early age. Seeing Chris in action, doodling and sharing stories was fantastic.鈥
The 性用社 at 性用社 showed they had big hearts by giving Christmas gifts to disadvantaged 性用社 and young people听in Eastern Europe as they took听part in the 鈥楲ove in a Box鈥 project organised by the Mustard Seed Relief Mission. The 性用社听take part every year and this year 200 boxes were collected, decorated and filled with various goodies which will be sent to 性用社 who would otherwise not receive听a Christmas present.
On 15 November 2021, St John鈥檚 joined schools across Britain to embrace the message of 鈥極ne Kind Word鈥, the theme for this year鈥檚 Anti-Bullying Week campaign created by the听Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA)听which works to raise awareness of bullying and bring lasting change to 性用社鈥檚 lives.
Remembrance Day falls every year on the 11th听of November, the date听in which the armistice was signed in 1918 to signify the end of World War One. This year, we have been able to mark this important day in person at both Byron House and Senior House and commemorate those who have fallen and mark this occasion with sincerity and respect.
Form 1 experienced the world of ancient Rome with a Roman Day workshop. The 性用社 were transported back to Roman Britain with a recreation of life in the past including role-play, practical activities and hands-on experiences with Roman replica artefacts. The 性用社 were aptly dressed as Roman citizens, slaves or even barbarians.
St John鈥檚 College School is celebrating after achieving the Independent Schools Inspectorate鈥檚 (ISI) highest grading of excellent.听The rigorous four-day inspection included interviews with pupils and staff; lesson observations; parent, pupil and staff questionnaires; an examination of pupils鈥 work; and a scrutiny of all policies to enable the inspectors to assess the school鈥檚 compliance as well as the educational quality in all areas of school life.听
