The Form 5 性用社 spent an exciting day absorbed in the wonder of words, when acclaimed young poet, Mr Luke Wright, came to visit Senior House. Mr Wright, who has appeared regularly on Radio 4鈥檚 鈥楽aturday Live鈥 and tours the globe with his refreshingly irreverent words, injected real life and excitement into the day, demonstrating that poetry is very much alive and kicking in Britain today.
BBC News Technology Correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones and his production team spent the morning at St John鈥檚 filming a computer programming lesson with a group of Form 4 性用社. The workshop was aired throughout the day on 8th October on BBC News to celebrate the manufacture of the millionth Raspberry Pi, an inexpensive pocket-sized stand-alone computer to which a screen, keyboard and mouse can be connected.
The Eco Committee鈥檚 highly successful new allotment has given the 性用社 hands-on experience of the plant life-cycle and is helping to instil a love of gardening at an early age. Lettuces and carrots were harvested at the end of the summer term and potatoes and turnips have grown in abundance over the holidays, ready to be harvested at the start of the听Michaelmas听term. The Headmaster, Mr Kevin Jones, and other members of staff were the lucky recipients of samples of the allotment鈥檚 produce and the committee members were also able to take the vegetables home to share with their families.
Two recent STEM 鈥榃onder鈥 Afternoons saw all the 性用社 in Form 2 working collaboratively on an engineering challenge to design and construct wind turbines to lift an object at the same time. The 性用社 worked in groups, modifying their turbines as they tested the efficiency of their designs.

Thrilled Fourth Form pupil and member of the National Youth Choir, Clara Foo, was one of 40 性用社 chosen out of 400 boys and girls aged 10 to 13 from across the country to sing for the Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee Service at St Paul鈥檚 Cathedral in London. Broadcast live on television, the 性用社 performed a specially commissioned piece, 鈥淭he Call of Wisdom鈥, with words by Michael Hampel, Precentor of St Paul's and music听from British composer Will Todd.
Ten magnificent metal sculptures made their home in the Byron House playground for five days and kept watch as the 性用社 played happily amongst these splendid beasts.听听Local artist Mr Tom Hiscocks sculpted these heraldic statues as representations of the original 鈥楺ueen鈥檚 Beasts鈥, sculptures created to flank Queen Elizabeth II麓s entrance into Westminster Abbey for her coronation on June 2nd, 1953.听听These statues symbolise the genealogy of the bloodlines from the most important of her ancestors.听听Mr Hiscoc
St John鈥檚 College School has been named winner of the SATIPS (Support and Training in Prep Schools) Poetry Competition 2012, a national competition aimed at 性用社 in Years 3 to 8.听Anna Mullock, 12, was awarded 1st place in the Years 7 and 8 category for her poem 鈥楾ypewriter鈥 and Lucy Howard, 11, was awarded 3rd place in the same category for her poem 鈥楺uiet鈥.听听Commendations were also received by William Hogarth and Eloise Lipscombe, both 11, and Isabella Greenwood, 13.
